Certified, Notarised or Apostille —
Know Which You Need in New Zealand.

Confused about the difference between a certified translation, a sworn translation, notarisation, and an apostille? You're not alone. Here's exactly what each means — and we'll tell you which one your specific situation requires.

✦ Most Common

Certified Translation

A signed declaration from an NZSTI-certified translator confirming the translation is accurate and complete. This is the standard requirement for Immigration NZ (INZ), NZQA credential assessments, DIA citizenship applications, NZTA driver licence conversions, and most NZ government agencies.

⚖️ Legal Authentication

Sworn & Notarised Translation

A certified translation signed and sworn before a New Zealand Notary Public — adding a formal legal layer of authentication. Required for NZ Court submissions, property transactions, formal legal filings, and documents requiring a Translator's Affirmation. Our sworn translators are authorised to provide legally binding affirmations.

🌏 International Use

Apostille Translation (Hague Convention)

An apostille is an international certificate issued by New Zealand's Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) under the Hague Convention — making your NZ documents legally recognised in all 86 Hague-signatory countries. Required when NZ birth certificates, marriage certificates, or legal documents are used in Australia, UK, USA, India, Philippines, UAE, and EU countries.

🏛️ Non-Hague Countries

Legalisation & Consular Translation

For countries not party to the Hague Convention, an apostille alone is not sufficient. Documents require consular or embassy legalisation — a multi-step process involving certified translation, notarisation, and submission to the relevant embassy or consulate in New Zealand. We manage the complete end-to-end legalisation process on your behalf.

Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know
Before You Order

Based on over a decade of helping people navigate immigration, legal, and educational translation requirements in NZ.

What is a certified translation and do I need one for Immigration NZ?
A certified translation includes a signed Certificate of Accuracy from a qualified translator confirming it's a true and complete representation of the original. For resident visa applications, Immigration NZ requires certified translations of all non-English documents. As of May 2025, visitor visa applications no longer require certified translations, but all other visa categories still do.
How fast can you translate my documents?
Standard turnaround is 3–5 working days. Express delivers within 24 hours, and Premium offers a 12-hour guarantee. Once you send your document, we reply with a confirmed quote and delivery date within 30 minutes.
Will my translation be accepted by Immigration New Zealand?
Yes. Our certified translations have been accepted by INZ, DIA, NZQA, NZTA, and NZ courts since 2013 — across 50,000+ documents. In the rare event of a revision request, we address it at no additional cost.
What is the difference between notarisation and an apostille?
Notarisation is where a NZ Notary Public certifies document authenticity. An apostille is additional authentication making the document legally recognised in all 86 countries party to the Hague Convention — including India, Philippines, South Korea, and UAE. We coordinate both for you.
What documents do you need from me?
Just a clear scan or photo of your original document — any format (PDF, JPG, PNG) is fine. Send via our order form, email, or WhatsApp. We respond with a quote within 30 minutes.
Is my document kept confidential?
Absolutely. All documents and personal information are handled under strict confidentiality agreements in line with NZSTI professional standards. We do not share, store, or use your documents for any purpose other than completing your translation.
